Michigan's waterfalls are almost entirely in the Upper Peninsula, where rivers drop off the Precambrian shield toward the Great Lakes. Tahquamenon Falls in Chippewa County is the most significant: the Upper Falls is 48 feet tall and 200 feet wide, with a volume second only to Niagara east of the Mississippi. The Lower Falls is a series of cascades around an island accessible by rowboat rental. Bond Falls on the Middle Branch of the Ontonagon River is a 50-foot horseshoe fall with a developed viewing platform. The UP has over 200 named waterfalls; the western end near the Porcupine Mountains has the highest concentration.
