Maine's waterfalls are in the western mountains and the Aroostook highlands. Smalls Falls on the Sandy River near Rangeley is a roadside series of cascades with multiple pools — one of the most accessible falls in the state. Step Falls in Newry is a broad granite cascade near Grafton Notch State Park with swimming access. Moxie Falls near The Forks is one of the highest waterfalls in New England at 90 feet, accessed by a 1.4-mile trail through the Kennebec River highlands. Gulf Hagas in the AT corridor has four named waterfalls in a 5-mile gorge — a National Natural Landmark.
