Waterfalls in Maryland

Maryland's most significant waterfall is Cunningham Falls in Catoctin Mountain Park near Thurmont — the largest cascading waterfall in Maryland at 78 feet over boulders with a developed viewing area. Swallow Falls in Garrett County has four waterfalls including Muddy Creek Falls, Maryland's highest at 53 feet. The falls in Garrett County are in the upper Youghiogheny watershed and are part of the same western Maryland gorge country that extends into West Virginia. Great Falls on the Potomac River — shared with Virginia — is technically a series of rapids and cascades rather than a single drop but is the most dramatic waterfall feature near Washington DC.
