INTO THE WILD · SWIMMING HOLES
Virginia's swimming holes span both sides of the Blue Ridge. Goshen Pass on the Maury River in Rockbridge County is the landmark: a 6-mile gorge of Class II-III water with wide swimming pools between rapids, on state scenic byway land. The Appalachian Trail corridor through Shenandoah National Park crosses several creek swimming spots. Crabtree Falls near Montebello is a 5-waterfall series with a plunge pool at the base of the lower fall. Whitetop Laurel Creek near Konnarock in the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area has cold mountain swimming with minimal development. The New River in Giles County has deep swimming pools below the rapids that draw locals on summer weekends.
Always check current conditions before visiting — water levels, algae advisories, and access roads change seasonally. Never swim alone in remote sites. Tell someone your plans. Explore all swimming holes on the Trek4Free map →
