Swimming Holes in South Dakota

South Dakota's swimming is at reservoirs, lakes, and a few Black Hills streams. Sylvan Lake in Custer State Park is the jewel: a granite-rimmed mountain lake with swimming in the Black Hills, walk-in access only. Spearfish Canyon has cold creek swimming in a dramatic limestone canyon. The Deerfield Reservoir provides warmer flatwater swimming in the national forest. Outside the Black Hills, the Missouri River dams — Oahe, Big Bend, Sharpe, Francis Case — provide scattered swimming beach access.
