INTO THE WILD · SWIMMING HOLES
Oregon's best swimming is river-fed, spring-fed, or lava-filtered. Tamolitch Blue Pool on the McKenzie River — where the river disappears into a lava tube and reappears turquoise in a natural basin — is among the most photographed swimming holes in the Pacific Northwest. Paulina Lake and East Lake in the Newberry Caldera are warm enough by August. Opal Pool in the Opal Creek Wilderness is a two-hour drive from Portland and worth every mile. The Rogue River north of Grants Pass has warm swimming by mid-summer where it bends through the Wild and Scenic corridor. Southern coastal rivers — the Chetco, the Smith — run warmer than the Cascades.
Always check current conditions before visiting — water levels, algae advisories, and access roads change seasonally. Never swim alone in remote sites. Tell someone your plans. Explore all swimming holes on the Trek4Free map →
