Missouri's swimming holes are in the Ozark Plateau, where the rivers run cold and clear over chert gravel. Blue Spring on the Current River is one of the deepest and clearest springs in the state — cobalt blue, 70°F, accessible by canoe. Johnson's Shut-Ins State Park on the Black River has smooth igneous rock formations and chutes that function as natural water slides — one of the best free swimming experiences in the Midwest. The Jacks Fork and Current rivers are both National Scenic Riverways with swimming access throughout their lengths.
