Swimming Holes in Maine

Coos Canyon at Byron is Maine's most visited natural swimming area: a granite gorge on the Swift River carved into a series of bowls, pools, and natural slides accessible from a roadside pull-off. Gulf Hagas on the AT corridor is a 5-mile National Natural Landmark gorge with four major waterfalls and multiple swimming pools — 8-mile round trip, worth every step. Smalls Falls on the Sandy River near Rangeley is a free roadside waterfall series with multiple swimming pools. Step Falls in Newry is a broad granite cascade with a pool system. The Dead River above Flagstaff Lake has summer swimming in the free-flowing section.
