Western Massachusetts has the best swimming geography in the state. Potholes State Reservation in Shelburne Falls features glacially carved granite basins along the Deerfield River — some large enough to swim in, others hip-deep and swimmable. Chesterfield Gorge has cold water in a narrow granite slot canyon in Hampshire County. The Swift River below the Quabbin Reservoir has clear water in the Route 9 corridor. Chapel Falls in Ashfield has a cascade and pool in the Chapelbrook Reservation. Eastern Massachusetts residents drive west — the Boston-area reservoirs are mostly off-limits and the coast is a different experience entirely.
