Swimming Holes in District of Columbia

The District of Columbia has no natural swimming holes. Great Falls on the Potomac River is a 20-minute drive from DC and has some of the most dramatic whitewater in the East — swimming is illegal and genuinely dangerous at the falls themselves. Seneca Breaks downstream at the C&O Canal has calmer water with informal swimming along the Maryland shore. For legitimate swimming hole geography, Virginians drive to the Shenandoah, and DC residents tend to follow.
