Free Camping in Oregon
Oregon's dispersed camping options run from the Cascades to the coast to the high desert. The Willamette, Deschutes, Umpqua, Rogue-Siskiyou, and Siuslaw national forests all permit dispersed camping. The Oregon Cascades have the highest use: the Bend-Fort Rock Ranger District around Bend has lava tube sites and high desert camping on Forest Service roads. The Wallowa-Whitman national forest in the northeastern corner has the most remote dispersed camping in the state — the Eagle Cap Wilderness corridor and the Hells Canyon area. Steens Mountain on BLM land in the southeast is a 50-mile drive from any services, with dispersed camping at the summit plateau above 9,000 feet. Oregon campfire permits are required (free online) during fire season.
No reservations needed for dispersed camping. Check fire restrictions at fs.usda.gov before your trip — restrictions change frequently in summer. Stay limit is typically 14 days at any one location. Find free camping on the Trek4Free map →
Before You Go
Gear up for dispersed camping — no hookups, no camp store, no running water
