Free Camping in Georgia
Georgia's Chattahoochee National Forest in the north Georgia mountains has dispersed camping throughout the Blue Ridge. The Cohutta Wilderness — 36,000 acres of primitive backcountry in the Cohutta Mountains — allows dispersed camping throughout. The Toccoa Ranger District has camping along the Toccoa River corridor. The Oconee National Forest in central Georgia has limited dispersed options due to smaller size. Most Georgia dispersed sites are accessible in spring and fall — summer heat and humidity make low-elevation sites challenging. The Appalachian Trail corridor across northern Georgia has established campsites rather than dispersed areas.
No reservations needed for dispersed camping. Check fire restrictions at fs.usda.gov before your trip — restrictions change frequently in summer. Stay limit is typically 14 days at any one location. Find free camping on the Trek4Free map →
