Free Camping in Alaska
Alaska's national forests — the Chugach and Tongass — are vast beyond lower-48 comprehension. The Chugach covers 5.4 million acres around Anchorage and the Kenai Peninsula. The Tongass at 17 million acres is the largest national forest in the US. Dispersed camping exists throughout both, but most of Alaska's camping is boat or floatplane access only. Road-accessible dispersed camping is concentrated on the Kenai Peninsula (Seward Highway, Sterling Highway corridors) and in the Mat-Su Valley north of Anchorage.
No reservations needed for dispersed camping. Check fire restrictions at fs.usda.gov before your trip — restrictions change frequently in summer. Stay limit is typically 14 days at any one location. Find free camping on the Trek4Free map →
Before You Go
Gear up for dispersed camping — no hookups, no camp store, no running water
