The Cascade volcanoes aren't dormant — they're resting. Crater Lake is a caldera left behind when Mt. Mazama collapsed 7,700 years ago. The lava fields at McKenzie Pass erupted 1,500 years ago. Newberry has an obsidian flow two miles wide that formed just 1,300 years back. This is not ancient history. Walk on it.

Good Volcanic Sites to Start With
Mt. Mazama erupted catastrophically 7,700 years ago — one of the largest eruptions in North American history. The caldera filled with rainwater to become the deepest lake in the US. The rim is a 33-mile hike. Drive it or walk it, the scale doesn't register until you're there.
Near Bend. Newberry is a shield volcano with a caldera at the top that holds two lakes. The Big Obsidian Flow erupted 1,300 years ago — a 700-acre field of volcanic glass. You can walk through it on a trail. Paulina Peak overlook at 7,985 feet.
Hwy 242 west of Sisters. The Dee Wright Observatory sits in the middle of a lava field that erupted around 1,500 years ago. You can walk right onto the lava, read the interpretive signs, and see the Cascades laid out in front of you. Free access, no crowds.
Southwest Idaho. A Great Rift eruption site — the last eruption was 2,000 years ago. Walk through lava tubes, cinder cone trails, spatter cones, and collapse pits. It looks exactly like the moon. The National Monument is free with America the Beautiful.
