About the AT
2,193 miles through 14 states from Springer Mountain, Georgia to Mount Katahdin, Maine. The AT passes through some of the oldest mountains on Earth.
Average thru-hike: 5–7 months. NOBO (northbound) departures run February–April; SOBO (southbound) leaves summer. Many hikers complete the trail over multiple years in sections — all count.
The Appalachian Trail Conservancy officially recognizes completions. Report your finish at appalachiantrail.org to receive their certificate and patch. Roughly 4,000 people complete the AT each year.
