West Virginia's Greenbrier Valley holds one of the great karst regions of the Appalachians. Organ Cave near Lewisburg was used to make saltpeter for gunpowder in both the Revolutionary War and the Civil War — 36 Confederate saltpeter works were documented inside. Lost World Caverns near Lewisburg offers wild cave tours. The cave count in the Greenbrier Valley limestone is one of the highest per square mile in the East.
