New York's cave geology runs across two zones: the carbonate rocks of the Helderbergs near Albany, and the limestone belt crossing the Finger Lakes into the Niagara escarpment. Howe Caverns near Cobleskill is the flagship show cave, with 52°F passages and an underground boat ride. Secret Caverns nearby is rougher and stranger. The karst around Schoharie County has some of the best undeveloped cave terrain in the Northeast.
