North Carolina's only show cave is Linville Caverns in McDowell County, in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The rest of the state's cave country is wild: the Appalachian limestone geology in the far west produces numerous undeveloped cave entrances in Buncombe and Mitchell counties. The karst is there, largely unmapped and unvisited.
