Minnesota's cave geography centers on Mystery Cave near Spring Valley — the state's longest cave at over 13 miles of mapped passage in limestone and dolomite below the Root River. The geology is part of the same Driftless Area karst that runs through northeast Iowa and southwest Wisconsin, unglaciated terrain where karst development has been undisturbed since before the last ice age.
